Excursions in the Oriental Region from Saïdia

Staying in Saïdia means having the Mediterranean at the end of the street — and the whole Oriental region within easy driving distance. The nearby coast (half-day trips)

Cap de l'Eau (Ras El Ma)

About 15 km west of Saïdia, on the road to Nador, Ras El Ma — better known as Cap de l'Eau — is a small fishing port where you can have lunch almost with your feet in the water. The quayside restaurants serve the day's grilled catch, and the coastline alternates between sandy beach and rocky coves perfect for a quiet swim. Half a day is enough — it's a favourite weekend escape for local families.

The mouth of the Moulouya

A few minutes west of the resort, where the Oriental's longest river meets the Mediterranean, lies one of northern Morocco's most beautiful nature reserves. Listed as a Ramsar site and a Site of Biological and Ecological Interest, the mouth of the Moulouya is home to more than 200 bird species: flamingos, ospreys, spoonbills and more. Bring binoculars — it's an ideal nature outing, especially in spring and autumn during the migration season.

Berkane and the Béni Snassen mountains (full-day trips)

Berkane, the city of citrus

About 30 km away, Berkane is the orchard of the Oriental region: its clementine, which holds a Protected Geographical Indication, is renowned throughout Morocco. The Thursday souk and the town's agricultural atmosphere make it a great foodie stop before heading up into the mountains.

The Zegzel gorges

Above Berkane, the Zegzel valley winds through the heart of the Béni Snassen massif: twisting roads, orchards of fig, pomegranate, orange and loquat trees, and forests of thuya and holm oak. It's a favourite for hikers and picnickers along the riverbed — beautiful in spring and autumn.

The Camel Cave

Near the village of Tafoughalt, the Camel Cave is a natural and prehistoric site listed as national heritage since 1953. A lit, purpose-built walkway lets you admire stalactites and stalagmites shaped over millennia. Check it's open before you go, as access can occasionally be closed.

The Pigeons' Cave (Tafoughalt)

A few kilometres away, the Pigeons' Cave ranks among North Africa's most fascinating archaeological sites: excavations there have uncovered Palaeolithic remains and, according to researchers, some of the continent's oldest ornaments and traces of human DNA. Perched at around 720 metres, the village of Tafoughalt also offers a welcome cool breeze in summer and lovely forest trails.

Oujda, capital of the Oriental region

Less than an hour's drive away (about 60 km), Oujda is the historical and cultural heart of the region. Wander through the medina and its landmark Bab Sidi Abdelwahab gate, step into the Dar Sebti palace — a hub of Gharnati Andalusian music — and visit the Sidi Yahya oasis, a sanctuary revered for centuries by several faiths. For food, try Karan, the local speciality. And in late July 2026, the event not to miss is the Rai Oriental Festival: four nights of free concerts in Oujda, from 22 to 25 July.
